"There I Was, In My Custom-tailored Suit And My Italian Leather Shoes" This Man Shared His Experience As He Tried Riding A Public Transportation And Netizens React.

This man shared his experience upon commuting from his home to Makati.

Shared his sympathy that surrounds the daily life of Metro Manila. On how each and every average filipino goes to work just to survive and make a living.

He did have a variety of choices to choose from but still tried to experience how hard it is to commute like an average filipino.

After the dreadful experience he had, he now understands how it feels and urge other filipino people to voice out their expressions to the government and make a change.

Gusto kong umiyak. :(

This morning, I was eager to go to Makati for my internship. I dressed well, so I'd make a good impression on my new boss and colleagues, who I'd meet today.

There are several options to go to Makati: MRT, P2P, bus, taxi or Grab (Uber is currently out of the question). It was early (6am) so I figured, I could ride public transport.

I don't commute often, so this is an adventure for me. But I also wanted to be smart about this.

I don't want MRT tho coz of all the horror stories around it: the frequent breakdowns, the long lines, the super cramped spaces. That can't be safe at all, especially if there's a stampede. So no.

P2P was also an option, but since it was early I figured I could still get an ordinary bus, which would make my walking distance shorter.

I don't want to pay the ultraexpensive Grab, and I doubt any taxi would take me to Makati at this time.

So I went to Philcoa. This was 6:10 am.

Lo and behold, the chaos which greeted me. There were so many people on the streets, trying to fit themselves into the jeepneys and buses plying their routes. I saw well-dressed employees cramming themselves into these roving tin cans, desperate not to be too late.

Forget freshness when people's body parts are sticking out from inside the bus! I dread to think of any pregnant women commuting.

And it was 6am!!! Six freaking in the morning!!! And there I was, in my custom-tailored suit and my Italian leather shoes, wondering how to get to my internship amidst all these people.

I gave up on the bus, deciding not to take the slot of someone else so I tried Grab instead.

The fare was very expensive already, but despite this, no one wanted to transport a person from QC to Makati, and I kept drawing blanks.

And so I decided, screw this.

I went back to UP.

On the ride back, I was thinking: Manila doesn't have a traffic problem, as much as it has a TRANSPORTATION problem.

We focus on building roads and selling cars, when we should be strengthening our bus and train systems instead. We're moving individuals, but not people. It's not a problem of logistics alone; it's also a social one, a policy mindset flaw, and requires both logistical and social solutions.

In a way, I'm glad Uber got banned. It made a person like myself, who likes to be driven around, to experience this problem firsthand. I've always strived to understand my privilege, so that I can deconstruct it and institutionalize it in the long run. This was a whole new experience altogether.

Waiting there, my perfume mixing with the stench of the street and my face slowly layering with powder from the dust and smoke, I felt so dirty and undignified. And I can't imagine the people who do this everyday, to maintain a living, the lives of their families depending upon it.

They risk their lives daily in these overcrowded, unhygienic, unsafe vehicles supposedly regulated by the government. :(

And this isn't even how the other half lives: it's how MAJORITY of the people in my country live! :(

We need to solve this, and we need to solve this fast!!! Not for entitled youngsters like me who complain on social media, but for the millions of workers and their families who don't have a voice in this administration, the backbone of our economy and the majority of our people.

This is just too much. :(

If you have any ideas on how to solve our transportation problem, let us know below.

Chances are, these are not new ideas, but who knows? Maybe we'll come up with a gem or two, and the govt will listen not only to experts but also the common people like us who LIVE through this experience everyday.

UPDATE: I'M HERE!!! I SURVIVED!!!

Imagine, I left home 6am.

I arrived at my new office at past 11am!

And it's... voila!... only 12kms away! 😂😂

Kung lumipad ako pa-Japan, mas mauuna pa akong makarating. :/ Even if I had jogged instead, I probably would have gotten here faster.

Haist.

Ikaw, anong kwentong #ISurvivedManila mo? :)
